Hygge Definition and Where it Comes From
Since there is no word in the English language to properly describe what hygge is we must rely on a loose definition.
That definition being: A feeling of coziness and comfort and contentment.
Which basically means that hygge is the embodiment of cozy contentment and all things that feel good.
The word hygge comes from the Danish where it is practiced there all year round.
No one really knows how or why it originated. Maybe someone created it during one of their blisteringly cold winters!
Either way we are all very grateful for this little slice of their culture that we can all appreciate and enjoy as well.
What is Hygge?
When asking yourself what is hygge there is no set-in stone rules for what it must be to be called hygge.
Think of cozy evenings by a wood stove drinking hot chocolate with loved ones. Or a brisk walk on a cold winter day all bundled up in scarfs and coats arm in arm with a friend.
Maybe hygge for you would look more like a peaceful morning drinking hot tea while looking out a window.
Or spending a whole day baking up a storm in a warm kitchen with classical music playing in the background.
The hygge definition is really up to you as it embodies what you would consider to be peaceful and cozy.

There’s nothing cozier than a long day huddled up indoors. Or is that just me?
Spending a whole day indoors might sound boring to some but during the colder autumn months I can’t think of anything more hygge.
If your home with your family, you can pull out all of those old board and card games that have just been collecting dust. Paring a family game day with plenty of homemade treats and hot drinks!
Or you could have a movie marathon with your significant other or if you alone have a reading marathon.
You could even put on some music and clean your whole house if you find cleaning to be a form of ultimate relaxation.
Candles and Hot Drinks
Candles and hot drink. I mean how could you possibly go wrong.
It’s a well-known fact that candle light has a soothing effect on the mind which is why many Danish people rely on candle light as part of their hygge.
You can fill your kitchen or room with beautifully lit candles and sit back and relax. Soaking up that warming natural lighting that light bulbs just can’t give.
Hot drinks can have very similar affects as we can all agree to how calming they are.
Whether your hot beverage of choice is tea, coffee, hot chocolate, or a matcha latte I can guarantee it is going to be soothing.
One easy way to incorporate a little bit of hygge into everything that you do is to always have a hot drink in hand!

There’s a reason why the term hygge style exists because hygge also comes with a certain look.
Hygge style isn’t about buying whats trending or in the latest style. It’s about what is cozy and inviting, what makes your heart happy when you see it.
Whether that be knitwear everywhere, earthy tones throughout your home, or collections of antiques. Whatever feels warm and inviting to you is what hygge style is all about.
You could also take this a step further and create your own cozy hygge nook!
Maybe this could be a comfy chair draped with knitted blankets and cushy pillows. Or a window seat tucked out of view and perfect for long days of reading.

This wouldn’t be an article about hygge if I didn’t mention books or reading. Books being one of the ultimate forms of achieving cozy contentment.
If you want to incorporate a little bit of hygge into your everyday life then you should always have a stack of books on hand.
No matter what you enjoy reading!
Reading in and of itself is calming and cozy and helps you to slow down and focus on one relaxing thing.
Bonus points if you grab a hot drink and light a few candles as well!
Enjoying Cozy Hobbies
Another important point to what is hygge is the fact that it encompasses self-reliance and well-being.
To me these traits pair closely with hobbies and being able to enjoy your own company. Or enjoying creating things that don’t involve your phone or social media.
It’s important for our mental well-being to have hobbies. To have the ability to create and make things and feel accomplished in a tangible way.
You can practice hygge by indulging in your favorite hobbies. Maybe for you that looks like baking, sewing, knitting, clay modeling, painting, or weaving.
Whatever it is it is an act of hygge to allow yourself to take time to enjoy those activities. To disconnect from reality for just a small portion of time to better yourself and your skills.

Lazy evenings are another one of those activities that I can imagine the Danish enjoying quite frequently.
Evenings should be lazy, I think. They should be a time of winding down and pondering the day and what you hope for the day to come.
They should be a time free of to-do lists and should be purely dedicated to relaxing and unwinding. The hygge way.
Maybe a hygge evening looks like a home cooked dinner and a movie or a long evening of cookies, tea, and reading.
Maybe it looks like a hot bath and a book or an early night in after a conversation with a loved one.
Whatever it means to you make sure you enjoy it to the best of your abilities. Soaking in the peacefulness of taking care of yourself during that very important time of the day.

You could try your hand at baking and make some delicious baked goods to enjoy with friends and family. Or all by yourself during a cozy day indoors.
Taking the time to enjoy good food is part of hygge as it creates that atmosphere of coziness.
