What is a Jade Roller?
You’ve probably seen photos and adds that pop up with pictures of jade rollers. Thinking to yourself, what in the world is that?
Jade rollers look very much like a cross between a hand sized paint roller and a marble countertop. Jade rollers are said to have been a part of Chinese culture during the early 17thcentury. The gemstones were mainly used as a practice to balance the bodies energy and to draw out negative energy. But you can take that as you will.
A jade roller is a strangely shaped contraption with either a jade or rose quartz on either end and often around the handle as well. You can purchase an affordable rose quartz roller here. I have only ever used a jade roller but there shouldn’t be a difference besides color.
One reason why they have been so popular can probably be related to the fact that they are very pretty and eye-catching.
What do Jade Rollers do?
What do jade rollers do you ask? Well they are used much like a massage tool.
Jade rollers are used to massage the face while cooling it down. As the gems are very cool to the touch. Some people even keep it in the refrigerator to keep it even colder.
Before I started jade rolling, I had no idea that there was a specific way in which you are supposed to use them. Thankfully I did my research before using it and was able to start off doing it correctly. Which is a rare thing for me!
You are supposed to apply gentle yet firm pressure to your skin always rolling from the center outward. This way of massaging promotes lymphatic drainage by pushing fluid away from the face.
This step should be done with an oil or serum. As jade rolling on a dry face can create pulling which is NOT what you want. Plus, jade rolling with your facial oil or serum can help it to be better absorbed by your skin.

Improves Circulation and Lymphatic Drainage
There is a lot of claims out there about what jade rollers do. But I’m sorry to say that, many of those claims are just overdramatic assumptions.
Any kind of massage is extremely beneficial to the body as massage promotes drainage. Drainage playing a very important role for the lymphatic system.
Promoting lymphatic drainage is always a good thing as it helps to flush the body of toxins and other things that might build up. This is where jade rolling is most beneficial. As its main purpose it to push towards the lymph nodes in your face and neck.
This also makes jade rollers beneficial at reducing facial swelling and puffiness. As the strokes and the coldness of the gemstones help to clear your face of trapped fluid.
As for circulation the idea is very much the same. Any kind of massage will promote better circulation. But jade rolling does make it a bit safer for your delicate facial skin.
The smooth, cool surface of a jade roller along with the addition of an oil or serum help to reduce any skin pulling or unneeded roughness. It creates enough friction to improve circulation without stressing out your skin.
And improved circulation means more youthful and glowing looking skin overall. Having good circulation also helps your skin to do the things that it needs to do in order to protect itself. As well as to stay looking smooth and supple.

Cooling and Calming to the Skin
As mentioned before, jade rollers are unique in the way that they are very cold to the touch. Unlike other massage tools jade rollers are naturally cold and provide a very pleasant coolness to the skin.
Jade rollers could be beneficial for people with inflamed skin or inflammatory skin conditions as it promotes coolness and calmness.
They can help to calm inflammation and flare ups but only for some people. Not everyone will find jade rolling to be very beneficial so it’s important to approach with care. Anything can make something worse if not done correctly or if used in any overly aggressive manner.

Another reason why I think that jade rolling has taken off and become such a popular item is that it can be used as self-care. Even self-care in and of itself is a fairly new term but it has also taken the internet by storm.
Self-care practices are all about taking time to take care of ourselves. Taking a moment to pause the busy bustle of our lives for some much needed me time. Jade rolling creates a very calming while at the same time, useful self-care option.
You can take five to ten minutes every morning or night to do a simple jade rolling massage on yourself. Pampering and taking care of your skin while at the same time inserting a moment of self-care into your day.
It’s the perfect combination and I personally have found it to be a useful way of reminding myself to slow down.
This is the jade roller that I personally used. Its incredibly affordable and I have yet to find any complaints about its quality.
The Best Way to Use a Jade Roller
Now we have already talked about how you use a jade roller in all of the technical ways but how do you really incorporate it into your lifestyle?
Most people say to jade roll every morning and night. I don’t do that; I just can’t be bothered in the morning. And I jade roll about every other night. Its all about what feels best for you and what times are best.
As we already know, you need to jade roll with an oil or serum. You can buy a facial oil or serum there are many excellent options, or you can make your own. I only ever use my own handmade facial oil that I adapt with essential oils depending on what my skin is needing.
Honestly, the best way to use a jade roller is to use it in the way that best fits your needs and lifestyle. As I say with everything, just because it works for someone else doesn’t always mean that it will work for you. Its all about trial and error and finding the routine that works best for you.
You could probably even multitask by jade rolling in the shower! I haven’t tried that before, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work!
Jade Roller Alternatives
Maybe you have managed to read this far and still aren’t completely convinced on the usefulness of jade rollers. I understand that, I can be a bit skeptical as well.
The good thing is that there are other alternatives if you just aren’t bought by the idea of jade rolling.
There is the perfectly simple facial massage that you can give yourself just with your hands. I regularly do this especially when I am feeling congested. Though be aware that it is a bit harder on the skin than jade rolling is.
Another option is using a gua sha. A skincare tool that is very similar to the jade roller except that it is shaped differently. Some prefer this method over jade rolling, but it’s all about personal preference. For myself I think that I would always stick to a jade roller over a gua sha as it gives you more freedom.
I hope that you have found this article helpful in your curiosity over jade rollers and jade rolling. There are simple tools that can be very beneficial if you are expecting the correct results. What do jade rollers do? Well lots of things just not as many as some people might think.
Despite what some people might say or try to convince you of. Jade rolling is not a cure all or miracle worker. It is beneficial and I think that it is worth your time, but you can’t expect any grand results.
Jade rolling can greatly help to improve your circulation and encourage healthy lymphatic drainage. Both things that can in the long term help your skin to be better preserved and look healthier.
