The mildest side effects can be discomfort and heat and the most severe can range more towards being bed bound and vomiting.
These ways to treat sunburn fast at home are not meant for severe sunburn as that might need to be taken care of by a doctor. But these home remedies for mild sunburns can prove to be very effective.
Helping to give some comfort and relief from the unpleasant experience of getting a sunburn.

Aloe vera gel is cooling and moist which helps to ease the discomfort of a sunburn. While keeping the skin moist to avoid further irritation or tearing.
It can also help to ease the peeling that you might experience as your sunburn heals.
It is best to use pure aloe vera gel, but you can try to find the purest option in stores instead. Applying a thin layer of the chilled gel over sunburnt areas. Doing so several times throughout the day for several days until you start to see a difference.
I like this aloe vera gel as it is more natural then other options that you might find in the store.
Warm Oatmeal Baths
Bathing in a tub filled with oatmeal might sound a bit strange the first time you hear it. But believe me there is a reason why this home remedy for sunburns has stood the test of time!
Oatmeal contains anti-inflammatory properties which is extremely helpful for irritated sunburnt skin. It also aids in strengthening your skins natural protective barrier as well as deeply moisturizing the skin.
The key to having a full recovery from a sunburn is to keep your skin hydrated and moisturized. To minimize as much damage as possible.
Oatmeal can even help your skin to start the process of repairing itself. Not to mention that an oatmeal bath will help with that itchiness that often accompanies a sunburn!
To get the most out of your oatmeal bath. Grind a cup of oatmeal into a powder and put it into a large satchel or anything that will help to keep the oats from escaping.
Put your oat filled satchel into a few cups of very hot water. Letting them steep like a tea as you start running a warm bath.
Then when your ready pour the oat filled satchel and oat infused water into your bath. Soaking for up to thirty minutes as often as once a day.
You don’t have to buy anything fancy either. I use this brand of Quaker oats to make simple and effective oatmeal baths.
Lavender essential oil is a very pleasant way of treating a sunburn. As it has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.
Helping the skin to repair and heal itself by speeding up your recovery. Lavender oil is also very soothing and calming which can help with the irritation and discomfort of a sunburn.
You could also add lavender oil to your bath as long as it is thoroughly mixed into a carrier oil before adding it to the water.

Black Tea Compress
Black tea is a wonderful way of easing the discomfort of a bad sunburn!
It contains tannic acid which helps to ease an irritated sunburn as well as being anti-inflammatory.
Black tea is a good way of calming down a sunburn while applying a cold compress as the wet tea bags once shilled can be applied to the skin much like a cold compress.
If you really want to try to soak up as many healing benefits from the black tea as is possible. You could also take a bath with black tea bags!
Again, you don’t have to get too fancy with this as any black tea will do. I usually use this black tea as I always have it on hand.
Like black tea witch hazel also contains tannis which allows it to help with healing and soothing a sunburn.
Witch hazel is anti-inflammatory and can help to ease a sunburn that is accompanied by swelling.
Witch hazel is also a good way to clean sunburnt skin without irritating it further or popping sunburn blisters.
To use witch hazel for a sunburn apply it to sunburnt skin with a cotton ball. Applying it several times throughout the day as needed.
You should be able to feel instant relief after using it!
Tips for Caring for a Sunburn
It’s important to treat your body with care when you have gotten a sunburn. Don’t push yourself to stay active or to take care of your skin like you normally would.
Avoid creams and lotions and any product with a strong scent or any exfoliants.
Use lavender essential oil to calm down an angry sunburn but never use more than a few drops that are well diluted.
Don’t bother any blisters or peeling skin and avoid using soap as that can further dry out the skin. Also avoid applying very cold things directly to the skin and don’t try out too many home remedies at once.
Keep your home cool and as much of the sunburnt skin uncovered as you can. Staying out of any direct sunlight or heat.
If you start to experience chills, fever, a rapid pulse, irregular breathing or physical weakness. You need to see a doctor.
Now we all know of a few things that we need to do in order to protect ourselves from the sun.
Such as applying sunscreen and not sun bathing for hours at a time. But those aren’t the only things that you can do to avoid getting sunburnt.
Avoid going out into the sun during the times that it is the brightest. Normally these times are somewhere between 10 am and 2 pm.
Make sure you are applying enough sunscreen to all areas of exposed skin and always apply it fifteen minutes before going out into the sun.
Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen every few hours and apply it after getting wet unless your sunscreen is water resistant.
It’s also important to keep in mind that you can get a sunburn without even being exposed to direct sunlight. So, make sure to apply sunscreen whenever you plan on being outside for more than twenty minutes.
