We’ve all heard it a thousand times, am I right? Heard the old lecture about how we need to control and manage or stress. To decrease those feeling but why is it so important?
Well stress is a killer in many ways. Stress kills motivation and creativity and can lead to that thing that we all know and dread. Burnout.
Stress can also attack your health. Lowering your immune system and exposing you to viral and chronic illnesses. Stress raises blood pressure and raises many other health risks with it.
And on an equally important scale stress takes the fun out of life. It’s like a leach because it sucks the color away. Leaving our lives feeling dull and grey and a bit too difficult to handle.

1. Take a Walk
Now this isn’t some new idea that I have come up with on my own. It is very well known scientifically that taking a stroll in nature is very stress reducing.
There is a healing power in nature and getting back to our roots per say. Like a flower sometimes we also need to stretch our petals towards the sun to embrace the calm that comes with the green grass and fresh air.
Just a simple ten-minute walk around a park or in the woods can help to clear your mind and bring you back to what really matters.
2. Read Something
In a time where the most popular choices of entertainment come from watching shows and scrolling through social media taking time to read is a luxury.
Whether you read a good book, a magazine or a few posts from your favorite bloggers reading will help to ease some of that stress.
Reading is a captivating thing and can draw you into another world where your worries don’t exist. And that in itself can be a great relief even if it’s just for a few minutes.
3. Rest Your Eyes
I am a firm believer in taking a good old-fashioned afternoon nap. I have cured many a bad day by simply laying down for an hour and waking up feeling like a new day had begun.
Of course, you can’t always lay down to take a nap or sometimes even that won’t work. But just taking a few minutes to rest and clear your mind can do wonders. Especially if you are feeling overwhelmed with stress and anxiety.
Sometimes we overwork ourselves and all our mind needs is a little break to rest and recharge in order to tackle those difficult situations.
4. Cook Yourself a Meal
Most often when we are stressed, we aren’t taking proper care of ourselves. There have been more times than I can count when I have skipped meals in order to work on things that I was stressed out about. And I’m pretty sure that I’m not the only one!
But taking care of yourself is important especially when you are under a lot of stress. Food can be medicine to the mind during those times. As well as just being necessary in order to function properly.
Take an hour out of your day. Pick out a recipe that you’ve been meaning to try and put some music on as you cook. Just be present and enjoy it as much as you can and take care of you because you deserve it!
5. Play with Your Pet
If you have pets you probably can completely understand this tip. Animals don’t worry or stress out about future things. Animals just are and live in the present.
They can teach us a thing or two in the ways that they just exist and spending time with them is a sure-fire way to relieve some stress.
Take a ten-minute break to just cuddle your cat or maybe throw a toy around for your dog. They can help to get your mind off of your troubles and make you laugh at their silliness.
6. Clean Something
Now this might not work for everyone but if you’re like me then cleaning is a good way to burn off some anxious steam.
There is a lot of truth to the theory that a cluttered home produces a cluttered mind. And in my experience, cleaning just seems to bring a little order into an otherwise stressful day.
Cleaning can give you tangible results and leave you feeling a little more accomplished and clearer headed.
Even if it’s just a few less dishes in the sink or a cleaner counter top.
Try using essential oils to help you relax. Aromatherapy can have wonderful benefits for an overly stressed mind.
7. Organize and Plan
Like cleaning your house organizing and planning clears out your mind. We carry a lot of to-do lists in our head and a lot of uneasiness and stress can be released when you create real to-do lists.
Organizing and planning out your week or month can greatly help to make you feel calmer and more in control. A great deal of stress comes purely from feeling like our life is out of control so if you create a plan and organize everything important you are certain to feel better.
Then if you are still stressed you can check off tasks and have something to keep you on track so that you know that you are getting things done. And that life isn’t burying you nearly as much as you thought it was.
This hassle free Planner is a nifty little planner to help minimize stress and keep you on track.
8. Meet Up with a Friend
Another great way to relieve stress is to take an hour or two to meet up with a friend for coffee or lunch. It’s hard to be stressed out when you’re around a friend and they can help to pull you out of the chaos of your mind.
There is very little chance of you walking away still feeling stressed. In fact, you might feel much better overall and ready to tackle the rest of your day.
Friends also create support and someone to relate to. We are all stressed out or worried about something and just knowing that you aren’t alone in and of itself can make a huge difference.
9. Listen to Music
I am a big fan of music and how it makes people feel. There is just something so uniquely different about music that nothing else can quite compare to it.
Putting on some good music can make an instant difference in your mood. Changing you from a knotted-up worrier into a karaoke star or the next contestant on Dancing with the Stars!
You can’t worry while your jamming out to a good song. You just can’t.
10.Write Down Your Thoughts
One of the greatest things that you can do on days where you are feeling like your insides are knotted with worry and stress is to journal.
To just pour out your crazy hectic thoughts onto a piece of paper with no other reason other than to get them out of your head.
Like planning and organizing journaling helps to get all of those thoughts out of your head onto a piece of paper. And more often than not after reading them you will realize just how little worry they really deserve!
There are many different kinds of journals that you can purchase to help you with this step. This Present Not Perfect Journal in particular is a very affordable journal that allows you to write down your thoughts and take a few quiet moments out of your day.
Why Are You Feeling Stressed?
Another important thing to do when your feeling overwhelmed with stress is to figure out why you are feeling that way. To pin point what exactly is causing you so much stress and uneasiness.
Maybe you have a deadline coming up or are having family issues. Maybe moneys tight right now or you have too many things on your plate without anyone to help you.
Figure out what the root of your stress is and go from there. If someone in your life is stressing you out either tell them or put some distance between you and them.
If moneys tight create a budget that will give you a visual idea of what you need to do until you have more to spare. If your over booked and over worked, get your family to pitch in more or talk to your boss about how you have been feeling.
Take charge of your emotions and take action! And when you can’t take action then practice some of these 10 ways to relieve stress and do your best to relax.
