I’ll admit whole heartedly that I am in no way a smoothie expert. 

I don’t go completely crazy with them or get very creative with my combinations. And I most certainly don’t make those wonderfully eye-catching smoothie bowls that you see on Instagram.

I just know that green smoothies are good for me and that they help to make up for the things that I am lacking in my diet.

So, if you are like me and just want to get a little more variety into your diet in a low maintenance way then here is the basic recipe that I stick to.

Greens

Now this ingredient goes without saying as this is called a ‘green smoothie’ so we have to have a heft amount of greens.

I don’t do anything extraordinary with this step as I just buy frozen spinach and use that as the main portion of my smoothie.

For a green smoothie you should have more greens than any of the other ingredients. But don’t worry because very rarely will you ever be able to taste them!

You can get as creative with this as you like. You could use spinach, kale, cucumber, celery, or any other green vegetable that strikes your fancy.

Just keep in mind that your options depend on the quality of your blender. I tend to stick with spinach as it is the easiest to blend up.

I tried kale one time with my very low-quality blender and let’s just say that it wasn’t a very pleasant experience!

Something Sweet

Maybe you’re not the kind of person who needs a bit of sweet in their life, but I most certainly am! I need something sweet in my smoothie or else it just tastes unbearably bland to me.

I usually go for a basic red apple since I can buy and freeze them as chunks and throw them into my smoothies as I need them.

Apples blend up easily and freeze well so I find them to be the perfect sweet fruit to add to my smoothies. But the options are endless.

You could use kiwi, bananas, melons or any other kind of sweet fruit that you enjoy eating. Many of us could use a bit of extra fruit in our diet any way.

Something Sour

This is also a very important flavor in your smoothie otherwise it will end up tasting flat as though it is missing something.

For something sour I like to either add in oranges, frozen pineapple, lemon or lime juice. All being good options to add just a touch of brightness to an otherwise dull tasting smoothie.

You could also try adding sour fruit juice such as cranberry or orange juice though.

Fiber and Protein

The next ingredient that you want to add to your smoothie is something fibery or full of protein. 

I stick to mainly using whole chia seeds and whole flax seeds for this ingredient, but you can use so many other things as well.

You could include nuts and seeds such as sunflower seeds, cashews or almonds. You could even include oats for an extra filling smoothie that will leave you feeling satisfied.

Something to Bulk it Up

This is an optional part of your green smoothie recipe, but it does add that final touch to a smoothie that you might otherwise miss out on.

To bulk up my smoothie I like to add the most common ingredient which is protein powder. I don’t add a lot just enough to give my smoothie that little extra boost.

A few things that I also like to add is herbs for digestion such as slippery elm powder and ginger. And herbs that act as a multivitamin such as alfalfa grass and nettle.

You could go all out and include your favorite herbs or protein powder. You could also add in specially ingredients such as this spirulina powder, goji berries or maca powder.

Liquid

The last thing that the easiest green smoothie recipe calls for is some kind of liquid to top off your combination of ingredients.

I usually just go for water, but I will occasionally use orange juice instead. I would also like to start using herbal tea instead of plain water at some point.

You could use your favorite fruit juice or tea. You could even use specialty health drinks such as kombucha or fresh pressed juice. Whatever you like and whatever you happen to have on hand will work.

If you are someone who has very limited time to make things such as smoothies, then there are several quick and easy tips that you can use.

Such as taking all of your ingredients and having them ready to go for when you plan on making your smoothie. You can do this by chopping everything up and put everything but the liquid in containers. Keeping them in the fridge for a short period of time or freezing them for later use.

You could even go a step farther and make a large smoothie and freeze it in an ice cube tray. Storing the frozen smoothie cubes in a container to blend up with a liquid later on.

You could drink this green smoothie as an afternoon snack to tide you over until your next meal or drink it for breakfast.

Just remember to properly bulk it up if you plan on having it as a meal replacement in order to feel fully satisfied.
