You don’t have to be strict with measurements or have to create your concoctions in a lab. You can simply raid your kitchen for a few gentle and skin loving ingredients.

I switched to making all of my own skincare products as I found store bought products to be fussy, expensive, filled with ingredients and too strongly scented.
Now I enjoy simple skincare concoctions that don’t contain fillers or preservatives or fragrance oils. They don’t strip or irritate my skin in any way.
By making my own skincare I was able to get to know my skin better, to better understand what it needs and what it doesn’t need.

Honey is easily one of my favorite skincare ingredients as it is gentle and soothing to all skin types.
It is a humectant, so it helps to moisturize the skin by drawing moisture to it. Deeply hydrating your skin in a completely natural way.
It is soothing and healing which makes it great for breakouts or for acne prone skin!
You should definitely invest in purchasing raw honey, bonus points if you can get your hands on raw local honey!
You can use honey as a base for face masks, you could use it to wash your face, add it to body scrubs or you could add a drop or two into a hot bath!
It’s incredibly versatile and great for nearly every skin type out there.
You should definitely think of investing in this manuka honey if you really want a skincare powerhouse!
I really love rice flour as a skincare ingredients as it provides gentle exfoliation that’s a bit less harsh than sugar.
Rice flour also helps to even out skin tone and lighten discoloration or sun spots. It is skin lightening which makes it a wonderful natural option for skin bleaching products.
It is very useful whether you want fairer skin or to get rid of your summer tan!
You can use rice flour as a face mask or as a gentle facial exfoliant. You can pour it into a satchel and add it to your bath or even use it to make rice water to use as a toner.
I like this rice flour brand as it is very soft and finely ground with reliable quality.
Yogurt is another kitchen ingredient that can do wonders for your skin.
It can help to sooth irritation and calm down skin redness. It is also effective for treating dark under eye circles for some people!
It is a great way of adding some moisture to your skin as it is rejuvenating and deeply hydrating. It can also have an anti-inflammatory effect on breakouts and acne.
To use yogurt on your skin you can use it as a hydrating face mask several times throughout the week. As it won’t irritate or dry out your skin.
Just make sure that you are using a good quality yogurt with no fruit added. Preferably a thick Greek yogurt that doesn’t contain any added sugar.
The perfect face mask would be a hearty dollop of yogurt with some manuka honey added!
Coconut oil has proven itself to be a wonderful kitchen ingredient for skincare. Namely as a makeup remover!
But coconut oil can be good for your skin for other reasons as well. As it is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory. This makes it a good option as a moisturizer for acne prone skin.
It is a great moisturizer for getting healthy and plump looking skin and is a very common kitchen ingredient. Which makes it easy to find!
Keep in mind that not all skin types love coconut oil and that it can sometimes dry out the skin or clog pores. It works for some people and not for others.
Coffee grounds are another excellent kitchen ingredient as they are filled with caffeine!
Caffeine being good for your skin as it plumps it up and creates firmer skin. While tightening skin in other areas such as around the eyes.
Some even swear by its ability to reduce stretch marks though take that with a grain of salt.
Coffee grounds are a great way of exfoliating your body as they aren’t as hard or rough as other options.
You can use coffee grounds to make a firming body scrub, a gentle face and lip scrub or a coffee infused eye cream for eye circles and puffy eyes!

Sugar is another one of those multipurpose skincare ingredients that you’ve all probably heard of. Maybe you’ve even made your own skincare product with sugar already!
Sugar is moisturizing to the skin which makes it less of a drying exfoliant. It also comes fine enough to be an exfoliator that isn’t overly harsh or abrasive.
You can make a delectable body scrub with brown or white sugar, add it to face masks for moisture and a light exfoliation or to lip scrubs.
I wouldn’t recommend using it on your face, however. Or using raw sugar as those are larger granules.
Oatmeal is a soothing and healing kitchen ingredient that is great for all skin types.
It moisturizes and sooths any irritation or inflammation as it is anti-inflammatory. Oatmeal also has the special talent of acting as a cleanser.
This allows it to naturally cleanse the skin of excess oils and dirt!
You can add oatmeal to face mask, to exfoliating scrubs, to your face wash or to your bath.
Try to avoid instant oats as they just don’t behave the same why. Preferably colloidal oats are the best option for skincare if you can get your hands on them!

Using Homemade Skincare Products
Using homemade skincare products is generally considered to be safe. I mean how much damage can a bit of oatmeal and honey do right?
But that being said there are a few things to be careful of when making your own skincare. Especially with kitchen ingredients.
Don’t use expires ingredients just because they are going on your skin and not in your mouth. And make sure to not get any water into your products unless it is to mix something that you are going to use immediately.
Keep your products in tightly screwed containers and use a clean spoon to get the product out. Just to be safe as homemade products don’t contain preservatives and you don’t want to be introducing bacteria.
Keep track of how old your products are so that you know if one is potentially expired.
Two natural preservatives that you could add to your products for good measure is vitamin E oil and raw honey. Just keep in mind that these are only very mind preservatives.
And the most important rule, don’t be scared off! Making skincare products should be fun and not at all intimidating!
Just practice logical safety and you should be able to enjoy your skincare products without concern!
