Well that’s what we are going to be talking about today because believe it or not you can replace over the counter sedatives. Opting out for a much safer and less risky option that comes from completely natural sources.

There are lots of scary things that you can read on the side effects of modern sleep aids. Many having side effects that can have terribly consequences for the future. Many modern sedatives are also highly addictive if used over a certain period of time. Not to mention the terrible hangover that often follows them!

I have struggled quite a bit with trouble sleeping the past few years which is why I took the time to educate myself on natural sleep supplements. I have always been very sensitive to the effects of modern sleep aids which is the main reason why I never took them for long.

Natural sleep supplements provide a safer alternative to getting your nightly Z’s in. allowing you to take your health into your own hands and become more self-reliant which, I think is always a good thing if done with care.

With a little caution and experimentation, you can achieve the results that you are looking for with natural sleep aids. Restoring your sleep and feeling better rested which will overall make you feel better as a whole!

Valeria Root

Valerian root is one of the very first natural sleep supplements that I ever tried. When I was studying herbs, I had to make an infused oil to use before bed as a topical sleep enhancer.

Valerian root has been shown to be able to reduce the amount of time that it takes to fall asleep once you’re in bed. Even reducing the time by 15 to 20 minutes! That’s a lot of time for someone who doesn’t get much sleep! It is also able to help improve your quality of sleep.

When taking valerian supplements you should allow up to four weeks in order to see full results.

Some supplements work best in pairs which is often the case for valerian root. Studies have shown that valerian root can work better in combination with hops (to be discussed below) and lemon balm capsules .

These best selling valerian capsules are guaranteed to help you get a better nights sleep!

St. John’s Wort

Though St. John’s wort is best known as a natural antidepressant it is also a good natural sleep supplement.

St. John’s wort might be capable of stimulating the bodies sleep inducing chemicals that reside in the brain. Which is why St. John’s wort is considered to be a natural sleep supplement.

One thing to keep in mind is that St. John’s wort has a long history of interfering and reacting to other medications. So, it is important to do your research before considering it as a sleep aid for yourself.

Natural Sleep Supplements: Finding Your Supplement

As you can see, there is an abundance of options when it comes to finding your own natural sleep supplement. This only being a short list!

But how do you choose? How do you know what supplement is going to work best for you or if you should try a combination?

As someone who as also run into these questions more times than I can count I have come up with a few helpful tips. Tips that can aid in your decision over what supplements are going to work best for you.

First you need to access exactly what you want and why you seem to be struggling with sleeping. If you just can’t stop thinking at night which results in hours before you are able to fall asleep. Picking out a supplement like California poppy or passionflower that quiets the brain might be your best option.

If you can fall asleep but often wake up throughout the night, then you should aim more towards a sedative like valerian and hops.

For someone who suffers from insomnia and just doesn’t feel tired I’d try out something like melatonin, magnesium or St. John’s wort.

Once you have decided which supplement best fits your individual needs you can try it out to see if you get any results. Some people see results immediately while some have to wait for weeks.

I always take some time to try out one supplement at a time before taking a combination. That way you are able to know exactly what works in which way. Otherwise you might be taking two things and only one of them works for you and you don’t know it. Or one gives you negative side effects but you can’t tell which one.

I find that slowly taking one supplement at a time makes things easier and results clearer.

If you struggle with sleep, don’t worry. You have plenty of options when it comes to natural sleep supplements! You don’t have to result to over the counter or prescription medication that could cause more harm than good.

Of course, it’s important to always tread with caution when it comes to treating yourself. The body is a complex thing and needs to be treated with care and knowledge. Always do your research and follow recommended doses. In fact, I often find recommended doses to be too high for myself. So, I often take only half or a quarter of the recommended dose!

It’s all about trial and error and testing out what is going to work best for you. In this post I have included affiliate links that direct you to supplements and supplement brands that I have personally used and trust.

The quality of supplements can greatly impact the results that you see. Which is why I have tried to only ever promote brands that I have tried myself and have seen positive results. While finding them to be budget friendly!

You deserve to get a decent nights sleep! So don’t delay in treating yourself to some amazing magnesium sleep supplements to guarantee a good night sleep!

    1. Thanks for stopping by, and I’m glad that you found the information here helpful!
As for the book I’m afraid that I am not much help as I can’t recommend something that I haven’t read myself. I learnt most of what I know through experience and my herbalism courses.
Whenever I do read herbal books I tend to go more towards older books as that information is still very valuable.
