There are lots of scary things that you can read on the side effects of modern sleep aids. Many having side effects that can have terribly consequences for the future. Many modern sedatives are also highly addictive if used over a certain period of time. Not to mention the terrible hangover that often follows them!

As someone who as also run into these questions more times than I can count I have come up with a few helpful tips. Tips that can aid in your decision over what supplements are going to work best for you.
First you need to access exactly what you want and why you seem to be struggling with sleeping. If you just can’t stop thinking at night which results in hours before you are able to fall asleep. Picking out a supplement like California poppy or passionflower that quiets the brain might be your best option.
If you can fall asleep but often wake up throughout the night, then you should aim more towards a sedative like valerian and hops.
For someone who suffers from insomnia and just doesn’t feel tired I’d try out something like melatonin, magnesium or St. John’s wort.
Once you have decided which supplement best fits your individual needs you can try it out to see if you get any results. Some people see results immediately while some have to wait for weeks.
I always take some time to try out one supplement at a time before taking a combination. That way you are able to know exactly what works in which way. Otherwise you might be taking two things and only one of them works for you and you don’t know it. Or one gives you negative side effects but you can’t tell which one.
I find that slowly taking one supplement at a time makes things easier and results clearer.

Of course, it’s important to always tread with caution when it comes to treating yourself. The body is a complex thing and needs to be treated with care and knowledge. Always do your research and follow recommended doses. In fact, I often find recommended doses to be too high for myself. So, I often take only half or a quarter of the recommended dose!
