What Are Essential Oils

Essential oils are made through a strenuous process of extracting the volatile oils from plant matter.

This process is very time consuming and can only be done with specific equipment and requires pounds of plant matter for just a few ounces of oil.

They are very much the essence of plants. Think of an orange peel and how you might get sprayed with a delicious smelling oil when peeling it. That is an essential oil!

Not surprisingly as all wonderfully smelling things seemed to originate in Egypt. They were also first created in that ancient place where they were made for religious, medicinal, and cosmetic purposes.

They were even sometimes used in the embalming process!

How to Use essential Oils

It is important to always keep in mind that essential oils are highly potent and need to be used with caution.

I have read so many articles where people harmed themselves by using them foolishly because they did not educate themselves on them. Don’t be like those people!

These oils are amazing, and I use them every day, but you must use them in the right ways.

Even the best oils can cause harm if used without caution or logic.

So, keep reading to find out how to use essential oils safely!

Whether or not it is safe to use essential oils internally is quite the argument amongst people. Some say yes while others say a hard no!

But there are many of the best essential oil brands out there that encourage internal use because like any medicine they have internal benefits.

Some of those benefits include:

  • They add flavor
  • Treat digestive issues
  • Encourage a strong immune system

These are just a few reasons why many like to use essential oils internally.

But it is important to understand which brands offer oils that are safe for consumption.

As a rule, you should never consume just any essential oil because it isn’t considered safe for internal use.

You should also be aware of the proper dosing when consuming essential oils. They are very potent which means that taking too large a dose can be toxic to your body!

How to Take Them

If you do decide to use essential oils internally, there are a few ways that you can do it.

Always start with a very low dose no larger than one or two drops in order to see how you handle the essential oil. Dilute all essential oils before consuming to avoid burning your mouth or throat.

Many sources suggest diluting them in water or juice, but I would have to disagree. Oils will only float on the surface which means that you will still be coming in direct contact with undiluted oils.

To take essential oils with a drink try adding them to something thick like milk or a smoothie and blend until everything is emulsified.

You can also take essential oils by adding them to food which is probably the safest way.

Before consuming any essential oils make sure to research all risks and side effects so that you can be prepared.

These peppermint pills contain both peppermint oil and peppermint leaf and are a great place to start with using essential oils internally!

On the Skin

By far the most common way when it comes to what are essential oils used for is for topical purposes.

This is also one of the safest ways as you can use much larger amounts in a safer manner.

Just keep in mind that even when diluted they are still very potent and should only be used on certain parts of the body.

  • Face, scalp, and neck
  • Legs and arms
  • Bottoms of feet
  • Hands
  • Abdomen and back

These are all generally safe areas to use essential oils though you might want to avoid your abdomen, face, and back if you have very sensitive skin.

Essential oils when used on the skin should always be diluted. A good rule of thumb that I like to use is ½ a teaspoon of carrier oil to one drop of essential oil or ten drops of carrier oil to one drop of essential oil.

Depending on how sensitive your skin is or what kind of essential oil that you are using means that you might need to dilute it even more.

When using essential oils directly on your skin always make sure that you are properly diluting them in order to avoid irritation.

This method is most often used for:

  • Pain
  • Anxiety
  • Muscle tension
  • Sleep problems

Once you have diluted your essential oil you can apply it to the area where it can best do its job.

For anxiety apply the oil where you can smell it. And for muscle tension and pain you can massage it into the problem area.

To treat sleep issues, apply your oil to the bottom of your feet before bed.

In a Bath

When it comes to how to use essential oils in bath water there are a few rules to follow.

Never just add essential oils undiluted to your bath don’t even add diluted oils straight to your bath!

They will just float on the top and touch your skin directly as you step into the water. Which can cause irritation and burning. Believe me I know this from experience!

Instead dilute your oils in milk, coconut milk, or bubble bath liquid so that they emulsify into the bath water.

Generally, it is considered safe to add up to 20 drops of essential oil to your bath water. Just keep in mind that strong oils such as cinnamon, peppermint, or clove should be added in much smaller amounts.

If you have very sensitive skin you might want to stick with calming essential oils for your bath. Such as chamomile and lavender essential oils.

In Oil or Lotion

Another very effective way of using essential oils is in your body oil or lotion.

The rules for diluting them is much like the one already mentioned ½ a teaspoon of a diluting substance per drop of essential oil.

You can add a drop of essential oil to a generous amount of lotion for an added boost or blend your own body oil with them.

They are also great additions to facial oils as they can help with pigmentation, scarring, and acne.

For Aromatherapy

Yet another very common way of enjoying the benefits of essential oils is with aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy with essential oils can be used for many different reasons from:

  • Stress
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Illness
  • Allergies

These are all reasons why you might benefit from using essential oils in an aromatic way.

And if you really start to look into it you can learn more about which ones to use for certain conditions.

You can go the easiest route by using essential oils topically for aromatherapy purposes.

Doing so can be as simple as applying a drop or two of diluted oil under your nose, on your temple, or on your pulse points.

For stress and allergies try orange and lavender. For headaches or migraines try peppermint and lavender. And for illness try eucalyptus or lemon essential oil.

When it comes to using a diffuser, you should always follow the instructions but there are some general rules to follow. For every 100mL of water you should add only 3-5 drops of essential oil.

By adding up the amount of water in your diffuser you can figure out how many drops that amounts to.

Using too much essential oil in your diffuser can be irritating to your lungs, eyes, and nose. So, start off with a small amount to begin with.

Essential Oil Precautions

As long as you know how to use essential oils you generally don’t have much to worry about. But here are a few precautions that you should still be aware of.

They are wonderful additions to your life, but it is important to use them in the ways that they are meant to be used in order to keep them enjoyable!

  • Never apply to skin undiluted
  • Never consume unless stated as safe for consumption
  • Always dilute before consuming
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Don’t use oils that are older than 3 years or have a broken seal
  • Don’t use light sensitive oils before going into the sun
  • Always dilute hot or spicy oils more than other oils
  • Don’t apply essential oils to delicate areas of the body
  • Keep all oils away from eyes

These are just a few important things to keep in mind when it comes to essential oil safety.

Follow these rules and you are free to enjoy essential oils as much as you please!
