As we are moving into this new year and have a whole new kind of busyness creeping into our lives. It’s important to adapt good nighttime routines. To prioritize winding down at the end of each day and securing the best quality of sleep. Which can help to replenish us for the upcoming day.
If your anything like me then this is something that you struggle with as well. I have a tendency to throw caution to the wind and go a bit crazy in the evening.
And by crazy, I mean giving no though whatsoever to the day ahead. Staying up way too late, eating one too many bedtime snacks, and forgetting to prepare for the next day.
It’s a tricky balance that I think most of us struggle with. Which is why I decided to write on the topic. Highlighting the few things that I think are the building blocks to a calm and productive evening.

How to Create a Nighttime Routine: Nighttime Habits
It’s important to develop healthy habits in every aspect of our lives. But it is especially important at nighttime since our quality of sleep can affect everything that we try to do the next day.
Some good nighttime habits can include restricting access to electronics after a certain time period to avoid being overstimulated. Or dimming the lights to promote sleepiness.
Some good nighttime habits could also be starting your night routine at the same time ever night. Letting your body know that it’s time to wind down. Creating the habit of going to bed at the same time to avoid tossing and turning.
Some restful promoting habits could include taking a warm bath or a hot shower. Or adding a few drops of peppermint or lavender essential oil to your diffuser.
Whatever makes you feel peaceful and makes you think of going to sleep is a nighttime habit. Even if that habit looks more like drinking a decadent hot chocolate while you watch your favorite show.
The question of how to create a nighttime routine is all about figuring out what works for you not just what works for everyone else.

Some important parts of how to create a nighttime routine involves making your life a bit less chaotic. A nighttime routine is no different. Creating a night routine won’t just help you to get better sleep. It will also help you to feel better overall.
As your winding down in the evening you have a chance to be mindful of how you will be feeling in the morning. Maybe you’re not a morning person. So, picking your cloths out the night before can be a big help to you.
Maybe you have to get an early start the next morning so you could prepare breakfast ahead of time. You can put the coffee on to avoid skipping that important meal.
Just because you are doing tasks in preparation for the next day doesn’t mean that you can’t still enjoy your evening.
I am a huge fan of making everything that you do pleasurable. So, put on some music as you do the dishes or an audiobook as you do a quick tidy up.
Whatever you need to do in order to prepare for the next day do it. In a way that still feels like a pleasure rather than a task.
Knowing that you are prepared for the next day can ease stress and greatly improve your nights sleep. As excess stress and worry has been removed.
If you’ve ever gone to bed with a list of things that you have to rush to do in the morning swirling through your head. Then you will understand what I mean by excessive stress.
No one is capable of getting a good night’s sleep when you know that you’re going to wake up to a long to do list in the morning.
Sometimes sleep just comes a little harder to some of us than others. Or maybe your so stuck in a bad sleep routine that you need a little extra assistance. Sometimes creating a night routine has to dig a little deeper than just relaxing activities.

Creating a Night Routine
The biggest thing that people struggle with when it comes to routines is simply getting one to stick.
Though routines have always seemed to come naturally to me, I can understand other people struggle as well.
It’s easy to become motivated after reading an article or watching someone else’s routine but setting one of our own is a bit different. Routines aren’t about the inspiration that started them. It’s about consistency and being dedicated to upkeeping that routine.
You have to be very strict with yourself the first few nights of getting into a routine, not letting yourself slip or give up.
The initial phase of changing what you would normally do is the hardest part but once you power through it, it will be a piece of cake.
You just have to give yourself time to adjust to what you want your routine to look like. And it’s also important not to go too overboard with what you want your routine to include.
I’ve been guilty of creating long and detailed routines in my head only to not be able to accomplish them in real life.
You can’t go from staying up until two in the morning on your phone to drinking tea, reading a book, and practicing yoga. Ending it all by going to bed at eight. It just doesn’t work like that.
