Life is stressful and has been a touch more hectic recently as we can all agree, I think. And we could all use a few tips for calming anxiety in our day to day life.
Which is why I have tried to put together a list of things to do when your feeling anxious and wound up too tight! So, I hope that these can be applied to your life and can help you to become a calmer person.

How to Calm Down
Let’s be honest we all struggle with stress and anxiety and if you don’t then please share your advice in the comments! Because I have yet to reach that place of tranquility in my own life.
Stress is everywhere and can be attached to everything which makes it a hard emotion to control.
Especially when many of those stressors are out of our hands and can’t be avoided. Because of that it is important that we learn to control, our emotions when our circumstances are uncontrollable.
And I hope that these few tips for how to calm anxiety help you as they help me as I try to be a calmer person!

Do Some Breathing Exercises
Breathing exercises are one of the most thoroughly researched methods for calming anxiety!
Many breathing exercises are composed of rhythmic deep breathing as deep breathing sends signals to the brain. Telling it and your body to calm down.
This is a great way of controlling signs of stress and anxiety. Such as a racing heartbeat, ragged breathing and high blood pressure.
Breathing exercises also help you to release tension in your body as the rhythm of your breathing effects your whole body.
There is a lot of information on different methods of breathing exercises so you can try several kinds until you find what works best for you!
These exercises can be done anywhere at any time which is very effective for all types of anxiety and stress. Including social anxiety and even PTSD!
This by far is the easiest and most realistic tip for how to calm down as it can be done anywhere at any time!
Take a Walk or do Some Stretching
Feeling overwhelmed and antsy? Try talking a walk or do a few simple stretches to loosen up and calm your mind and body.
Calming anxiety can be as simple as taking a break from what you are doing to clear your head.
Taking a short walk through a nearby park or through your neighborhood can do more good then you realize.
And if that isn’t possible then a few minutes of slow stretching can have very similar effects.
It is common knowledge that we store stress in our muscles which result in tension. This tension creates a cycle as it is caused by stress then creates even more stress.
By walking or stretching you are working at removing this tension in the body. Helping to release that stress that has been building up.
Not to mention that sometimes your mind just needs a break from what it is doing.

Take a Break
This tip goes hand in hand with the one mentioned above.
If you are feeling overwhelmed and stressed out, you might just need to take a step back for a few minutes.
If you can try to take a fifteen minute or half hour break to walk around, grab a bit to eat or read a short piece of writing. Anything to help clear your head and take your mind off of what is stressing you out.
You will be surprised at just how effective this can be for calming anxiety and bettering your focus!
Wondering how to calm down quickly? Why not try some aromatherapy?
By practicing aromatherapy, you are sending signals to your nervous system to calm down and smell the roses per say.
There are many studies out there that prove just how effective this can be when it comes to how to deal with stress and anxiety.
You can practice aromatherapy by burning naturally scented candles or using an essential oil diffuser.
You could even keep a naturally scented lotion nearby or dap a drop or two of essential oils on your temples and pulse points.

Drink Some Herbal Tea
I’ve talked much about the health benefits of consuming herbs and how I personally like to use them for daily stress relief.
And one of the best ways to use herbs for calming anxiety is by drinking them in the form of tea!
Not only do you get the calming benefits of the herbs but even just sitting down to drink a cup of something warm is calming in its own way.
Try taking a few minutes out of your day to slowly prepare a cup of tea. Taking time to sit down and sip until your mind feels calmer. Having a tea break in the middle of your day is a great way of creating a moment of calm!
You can try drink lemon balm or peppermint tea or indulge in an herbal blend to calm the nervous system.

Rationalize Your Feelings
If we were honest with ourselves, I think we would all admit that often our emotions are irrational. Especially when it comes to stress.
We stress about things that have already happened and can’t be undone, things that will never happen or things that might happen. And when you think of it it all seems rather silly.
But in the moment those feelings can see very real and very much worth all of that worry. Which is why one of the best tips I have is to try to rationalize what you are feeling.
If you can feel yourself getting worked up over something take a moment. Just a few minutes to really examine the facts from a logical point of view. Most likely you will find that your worry is not doing much good.
This doesn’t always work and sometimes your stress might be very rational and very valid but it’s worth a try. Especially if you know yourself to be easily worked up.
Make a List
When it comes to how to calm down one of my favorite tips is to make a list.
If you’re like me then you might be easily worked up when it comes to feeling overwhelmed and behind. As if you woke up too late in the week and can’t seem to catch up on all of the things that you need to do.
That’s a stressful feeling and can leave you running from one thing to the next. Not standing still long enough to actually accomplish anything which only leads to even more stress and worry.
My favorite tip for how to deal with stress is to sit down and write a list. It can be any kind of list as long as it helps to clear your frazzled mind.
It can be a list of things that needs to be done, things you need to buy, errands you need to run and so on.
Just doing this simple task can help so much with that overwhelming anxiety that you might be feeling.
Turn on Some Music
Now I might be a bit bias because I am a music lover, but I find music to be very calming on the mind.
Whether you like old music or new music or something in-between I think that most music produces a calming effect.
It gets you out of your head and provides a moment of enjoyment with very little thought.
So, if you’re feeling stressed out maybe to try to listen to some music. Dance around a bit maybe even shimmy a little! It can be very relaxing and uplifting to your mind.
If you can multitask and work while listening to music in the background that’s even better!
Finding Long Term Stress Relief
Really the best way when it comes down to how to calm down is to practice long term stress relief.
Practicing better stress management on a daily basis rather than waiting for anxiety to strike. Trying to develop better ways of dealing with stress long before it strikes hard.
Long term stress management looks very much like practicing good mental health tactics. Such as giving yourself off days, allowing yourself to feel down sometimes, rationalizing your feelings and confronting them. As well as practicing self-care and self-awareness on a daily basis.
Calming anxiety in a big way comes down to those little daily habits that you practice. Those are what really help when it comes down to long term stress relief.
