Daith Piercing for Migraines: How it Works
The main connection that daith piercings have to migraine relief is through acupuncture. As it is believed that the daith piercing activates an acupuncture pressure point in the ear.
This pressure point is believed to be closely connected to migraines and headache related pain that goes through the head. The main idea behind using a daith piercing is that it helps to relieve pain in the head and ease the tension there.
These pressure points are very specific however and requires precise placement in order for the piercing to be effective.
It must be done by a professional, preferably someone who understands the basics of pressure points.

What are the Benefits of a Daith Piercing for Migraines?
The research behind whether or not a daith piercing for migraines is really effective or not is not entirely conclusive. The research has shown positive results but not nearly enough to be formally recommended.
So, this is still considered to be a remedy and not a cure and it might work for you but not for someone else. It is just one of those things that can’t be guaranteed. It really just depends on the person.
So, just keep in mind that this is not yet considered to be a foolproof solution, only a promising alternative therapy for migraine relief. It most certainly isn’t a cure but it might help all the same.

If you are able to find relief from migraine pain with a daith piercing for migraines it is definitely an easy solution!
Unlike medications or herbal treatments or therapies. A daith piercing is something that you do once and can forget about from now on.
This makes it an excellent option for migraines or frequent headaches as it doesn’t require any more work than the initial piercing!
This is a great way to try to avoid taking over the counter pain pills or migraine medication. Or at least lessening the amount of pain meds that you have to take on a regular basis.
Is Very Effective for Some
Though research is still not completely certain that daith piercing for headaches is a reliable solution. There are some who swear by its effectiveness!
Some people have found complete relief and have called this one of the best natural migraine remedies.
Of course, this is all hear say but it does show that it can be very effective for some who try this piercing out. Most migraine home remedies are generally hear say, so you just have to decide if you think it is worth trying out for yourself.
It isn’t a guaranteed solution just yet, but it is definitely a pain relief alternative worth trying if you suffer from frequent migraines and headaches! If you have run out of other options, this might be a very good option for you right now.
You could even see an acupuncturist to see if they thing this would be a good option for you personally. As they might be able to give you additional insight.
Can Provide Mild Pain Relief
Even if you aren’t one of those lucky people who found complete pain relief with a daith piercing for migraines. You might still be able to have some mild pain relief.
I personally have a daith piercing and noticed immediate results. It didn’t solve my problem completely but there is a noticeable lessening of pain on the side of my head where the piercing is located.
For most, a daith piercing won’t be a complete solution or a cure by any means. But it is a good option if you are fed up with trying to treat migraines and headaches!
And the good thing is that it is easy to get rid of if it just doesn’t work at all for you. All you will need to do is remove the piercing and the skin and cartilage will heal on its own.
Is it Safe?
Though all piercing provides some form of risk, cartilage piercing often are more likely to raise complications.
Daith piercings are located in the cartilage in your ear in an area that is prone to bacteria. Because of this there is a possibility that you might experience the following side effects:
- Worsened migraine pain
These are all common risks behind any piercing especially cartilage piercing. So, just keep this in mind if you decide to get a daith piercing for migraines.
One ways to limit the risk involved in getting a daith piercing is to get it done by a reliable piercer who knows what they are doing.
How to Take Care of a Daith Piercing
Because daith piercings are located in an area that is very prone to accumulating a build up of bacteria. It is important to take care of tis piercing for the first few moths that you have it.
Once the piercing has healed completely you most likely will be able to forget about it and leave it alone. But until it has healed it is best to keep a close eye on it
Any piercing has a good chance at getting infected, so it can never hurt to stay on the side of caution.
Clean Your Ear Before Getting the Piercing
The first thing you want to do is to completely clean your ear before going to get the piercing done.
A good piercer is going to clean your ear before making the hole. But as we mentioned above, the ear is full of bacteria, so it cant hurt to clean it up yourself beforehand.
Try to scrub away all the dead skin and wipe your ear dow with an alcohol wipe.
Clean The Piercing Daily
After you have gotten your daith piercing done, you will want to leave it alone for the first one to two days. This is when it is going to bleed the most and be more painful.
After the first or second day, you will need to start cleaning the area at least once a day. You can clean it up to three times a day depending on how it is acting.
The best way to clean your piercing is with a mild solution of sea salt and warm water. The most effective way to do this is to soak a cotton ball in the water and hold it to your ear for a few minutes at a time.
As you do this, you will be able to slowly clean away any dried blood. Do not pick at the blood or you will cause more bleeding.
Do this everyday until the piercing has completely healed and is no longer painful or bleeding.
Leave it Alone
Throughout the healing process it is extremely important that you leave the piercing alone! Try to avoid touching it or playing with it.
Try to simply keep your hands away from your ear. Touching it too much can not only irritate it but can introduce infection causing bacteria to the piercing.
Once the area has completely healed you can be much less strict. Once it’s completely healed and closed up it won’t be as vulnerable to bacteria.
It is still a good idea to occasionally clean around d the piercing though.
If you don’t want to commit to getting a piercing you could try out a few other natural migraine remedies instead!
There are several alternative options that you can go with in order to achieve some relief from migraine pain or chronic headaches.
It is always best to use natural options as frequently as possible as they have less serious side effects then medication or over the counter pain killers.
Make sure that you also give each option enough time to begin working. With many natural alternatives it can take up to a month or six weeks to see positive results!
One herbal pain relief remedy that I always talk about in regards to headaches and migraines is white willow bark capsules and feverfew capsules. Combine these two herbs with caffeine and you have an amazingly effective pain killer!
You could also try this white willow bark feverfew blend in order to limit the amount of pills that you have to take.
Avoid Harsh Lighting
Migraines can be caused by bright lights or be further irritated by their presence. They can even be caused by overly bright lights if you are sensitive enough to them.
Try to avoid staring at bright phone, laptop, or computer lights or dim the lighting. Put curtains over harshly lit windows and wear sunglasses on bright days.
There are many creative ways that you can soften the lighting in your home in order to prevent lighting related migraine headaches.
Be Aware of Triggers
Sometimes migraines are caused by triggers that we might have to certain things in our life.
These triggers could be anything from certain foods to noises to certain strong smells. The good thing is that these triggers can be avoided once you are aware of them.
If you suspect that your migraines might be caused by a trigger related to food. Try keeping a food diary or tracker to track your migraines and diet.
If you think it is a noise or alarm on your phone, make the noise less loud or find a different alert.
Whatever you think your trigger is, try to prevent it from happening. This will help you to take more control over your migraines and prevent them more often.
Sometimes the best course of action to take when you are fighting a relentless migraine is to just take some time to lie down
Take the time to take a break and rest your eyes and head. Long hours of working can often result in us squinting at whatever we are working so hard on. Often straining our eyes and sitting with bad posture or straining or neck muscles.
These are all things that can cause or at least promote a migraine. So, try to take a 30-minute break and get something to eat or drink or just lay down for a brief nap. You don’t even have to fall asleep necessarily, just try to rest your eyes and let your muscles relax.
I hope that this article has helped you to better understand what the daith piercing is and how it can help to treat migraines and headaches.
If you are willing to give it a try it can be an excellent alternative to pain medications or pain killers.
Just keep in mind that it doesn’t work for everyone and that it might take a while to work if it does work for you!
