Reducing waste in general is a heavy and very important subject and one that definitely needs to be addressed. But when it comes to food waste, I believe that we should all be concerned about it on the principle of the thing.
It’s just wrong to waste such a valuable resource such as food especially when there are so many people and places in the world that suffer from a lack of it.
If we are lucky enough to have an abundance of something, then I think that it is our responsibility to use that resource wisely. To use it responsibly and to not squander it purely because we can.
Reducing the amount of food that goes to waste is really quite easy if a little though and care are put to that goal. Once you develop more responsible routines for managing food you will wonder how you ever threw away so much!

1. Make Broth
One very popular method for getting the most out of your groceries is by making your own homemade broth!
Instead of throwing away those ends of carrots and onions or broccoli and cauliflower stalks save them and make vegetable broth. Throw in those old carrots and that wilted celery stick! Throw in any part of the vegetable that you would normally throw away and make a delicious broth out of it!
This is a great way of using up everything and getting the most out of your groceries. You can freeze the broth for soups to make later on or drink it like a tea because it’s just that good!

2. Dye Fabric with Plant Scraps
Now this might see like a strange tip but if your crafty and have some fabric lying around then why not dye it?
Things that you would normally throw away such as onion skins and avocado skin and pits make wonderfully effective fabric dyes. Even leftover tea bags or coffee grounds can be repurposed to dye fabrics.

3. Meal Plan Realistically
One of the biggest culprits of food waste is overbuying on your weekly groceries. Not planning properly or just splurging and grabbing a few items too many.
Plan your groceries to the T analyzing how big your family is, how much your normal portions are and how many meals you need groceries for.
Using a meal planner comes especially in handy when you want to buy only what you need.
Really try to be as realistic as possible and buy only what you need. Being cautions especially with fresh food as it will not last if you buy too much or decide not to use it after all.
4. Repurpose Leftovers
I know, I know. We all hate leftovers especially the unsightly kind. But leftovers are food waste too and oftentimes a single family can waste a lot of them.
Have a leftover night at the end of the week or pack leftovers for school and work lunches. Repurpose that old rice into a stir fry and crisp up that mushy casserole and add a delectable side.
Spice things up and add in new stuff to make left overs look a bit more appealing. Or simply set everything out as your own personal buffet!

5. Freeze Scraps and Excess Food
One tip that is an absolute lifesaver is to freeze food scraps and excess food. I swear that any time I make a rice dish or a soup I go overboard and make too much. So, what do I? Well I freeze it for later!
If you’ve made too much food portion it out and freeze it for days where you don’t feel like cooking. Or if you have food scraps that just won’t last until you need to use them throw them in the freezer.
You can use those scraps later in soups and casseroles or in your vegetable broth!
6. Look at What You Normally Throw Away
Before you go grocery shopping take a good look at what you seem to be routinely throwing away. Is it celery that goes limp before you can use it, tomatoes that turn to mush after going unnoticed for too long or is it spinach that just expires to quickly to be used?
Take a good long look and figure out how you can prevent that food waste from happening again. How can you use those items faster or do you just need to avoid buying them entirely?

Keeping a clean fridge is vital to reducing food waste as it allows you to see everything that you have. So that you can keep an eye on what needs to be eaten first.
9. Feed The Earth
Another excellent way of reducing food waste is composting A.K.A. feeding the earth. Unlike throwing food away in the garbage composting allows the food to decompose and go into the soil which will benefit it and anything that grows in it.
If you have a garden or flower bed, try composting your food scraps in it. It will benefit your plants by creating a much more fertile and rich soil for them to grow in.
10. Get Creative
Ultimately the best ways to reduce food waste is to get creative!
Look up crafts and DIY’s that call for food scraps. Dry orange slices to make beautiful decorations. Save your coffee grounds to repurpose into a coffee scrub or fruit scraps to make into a fruity tea.
Dry and grind up vegetables to make your own bullion seasoning, juice vegetable scraps or add them to smoothies to get a little more nutrition in. anything counts so go crazy and see what you can do with what you would normally throw away!
